Celebrate Spring as they present sheep shearing, llamas, angoras, traditional textile demonstrations such as weaving, spinning, rug hooking, tatting, and lace making.  Children can partake in crafts and games.  Enjoy tours of the historic Kissam House. 

New at the National Archives

NARA has launched a new Online Public Access Catalog.
It's been designed to provide a single, centralized catalog to search across multiple research catalogs at once.  It includes access to the Archival Research Catalog (ARC), Access to Archival Databases (AAD), Archives.gov, and the Electronic Records Archives (ERA).  It is intended to make records of the federal government easier to find. 

Alien Files Find New Home at the Kansas City National Archives
For the first time, more than 300,000 case files on alien residents of the United States who were born 1909 and prior are now open to the public at the National Archives at Kansas City.  "Alien Files" (commonly referred to as "A-Files") were utilized by the Immigration and Naturalization Service starting on April 1, 1944, as a means of recording the details of any active case of an alien not yet naturalized as they passed through the United States immigration and inspection process.  They contain a wealth of information such as photographs, correspondence, birth certificates, health records and more.  The files may be viewed in person at the National Archives in Kansas City or copies of files may be ordered for a fee. For more information visit http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/aliens/a-files-kansas-city.html .

Footnote.com- 71 million documents available online in 2010

2010 has been a busy year for the people at footnote.com. Over the past year they've added millions of documents to Footnote. Here are some of the titles they've been working on lately:

Civil War Service Records, Union and Confederate

Compose a soldier's wartime history from cards describing his physical characteristics, how much he was paid, who he fought with, if he was imprisoned or hospitalized, if he died in battle or of a disease, or even if he switched sides during the war.

World War II War Diaries

War diaries recorded the day-to-day operations of Navy units during World War II. Though often routine, they reveal surprising and interesting insider accounts of wartime activities.

Holocaust Era Assets

View artwork and artifacts looted by the Nazis during World War II. They were collected, photographed, and classified in an attempt to reunite the objects with their original owners.

Genealogy Open House at the National Archives in New York City

A wonderful opportunity for genealogists.

In celebration of Archives Month, the staff and volunteers at NARA in NYC are hosting an open house from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M on October 12, 2010. They will provide hands on assistance to help direct your family history research. Topics include: Getting Started Online, Federal Census Records, Federal Passenger Arrival Records, Naturalization Records and other genealogy resources outside of NARA. The day will conclude with a behind-the-scenes Archival Stack Tour, highlighting some of their treasures.

Huntington Historical Society's New Exhibit

From House Calls to Hospitals: Huntington's Healthcare Heritage is the newest exhibit at the Conklin House, 2 High Street, Huntington. The exhibit features a recreation of Dr. Teich's Office c. 1940. This is a rare and unique opportunity to view medical equipment and ephemera from days gone by.

Anyone who has known or worked for Dr. Teich is asked to share their memories of him. Please contact Teresa Schwind at teresa_schwind@huntlib.org for more information.

Oral History Celebration!

Thanks to all our wonderful participants at our first oral history gathering in the Library. We all shared memories of the Hurricane of '38, Kings Dairy, Main Street and Huntington Station (before the demolition.)

New Exhibit in Huntington Town Hall features 1930's Girls’ Dress and Ladies Gloves from Saks Fifth Avenue, New York

For Women's History month 2010, the Huntington Town Clerk's Archives has mounted an exhibit in Town Hall that highlights the activities of prominent women in Huntington over the years. This is a co-operative effort of the Huntington Town Clerk's Archives, the Huntington Historical Society and the Huntington Public Library. Among other artifacts that this exhibit features, is a girl's dress and a pair of vintage, 25" long, white kid gloves from Saks Fifth Avenue. One of many styles of ladies’ gloves of the times. These are only a few of the elegant pieces on loan to the Archives from the Huntington Historical Society. The exhibit will remain on display until the end of April 2010 and it is free of charge. Exhibit panels and cases are located in the lobby of Town Hall, across from the Town Clerk's Department, and on the third floor across from the Council Office.

The Conklin House Lecture Series

On March 18th,at 2 pm, The Huntington Historical Society is presenting a lecture given by Dr. Natalie Naylor entitled, "US Presidents and First Ladies, The Long Island Connection."
President Theodore Roosevelt is well known as a Long Islander, but a number of other presidents or their wives also had some connections with Long Island, sometimes before or after their presidency. The Huntington Historical Society is please to presnet this special lecture in recognition of Women's history Month.

Digital Sanborn Maps

Just a reminder that Huntington Public Library is proud to announce the acquisition of Digital Sanborn Maps for use within the library. Over 100 years ago, the maps were created for assessing fire insurance liability in urbanized areas across the United States. Today they are a valuable source of historical information. The maps include street names, building numbers with physical descriptions, street widths and more. Their research potential is endless and for genealogists and local historians they can be used to locate ancestor's homes and neighborhoods.
HPL's collection includes many urban areas throughout New York State including maps of Huntington in the following years: 1886, 1892, 1897, 1902, 1908, 1914, 1922 and 1930. The map above displays a section of Main St., Wall St. and New York Ave in 1902.

Huntington's Entrepreneurs Exhibit

"The Business of Doing Business in Huntington" is the theme of the the exhibit at the Huntington Historical Society's David Conklin Farmhouse Gallery.

The exhibit focuses on several businesses in Huntington from the expected to the somewhat unusual. They highlight the collections of the Society's archives, including family papers, photographs, ledgers and personal collections.

Among the featured businesses are the Funnell and Son Drug Store, the Crossman Brickyards at West Neck, Lockwood Marble Works, Paulding Cider, several diaries, Hartmann's Department Store, and Peggy's Fabric Outlet.

Getting the Most Out Of Ancestry.com workshop, is presented by Huntington Public Library and the Genealogy Workshop of the Huntington Historical Society on Wednesday, November 11th at 7:00 pm in the main auditorium of the library.

Genealogy Workshop

On Saturday, October 24th from 10-11:30 a.m., the Genealogy Research Group from the Patchogue-Medford Library is holding a workshop entitled: Family Research Using footnote.com. Footnote.com is a place where original historical documents are combined with social networking in order to create a truly unique experience involving the stories of our past. Our library has recently added this subscription based website to the Suffolk e-Resources.
